Congenital blindness

Congenital blindness is vision loss present from birth, affecting how a person sees the world and their daily life.
Symptoms:

Congenital blindness may present with various observable signs depending on the underlying cause. Infants may exhibit lack of eye contact, failure to follow objects, or poor visual tracking. Abnormal eye movements, such as nystagmus (rapid involuntary eye movements), may occur. Some infants have structural abnormalities, including cataracts, clouded corneas, or abnormally small or misshapen eyes. Delays in visual development, lack of response to visual stimuli, and difficulties with hand-eye coordination are also common indicators. Early detection is essential for timely intervention and support.

What is Congenital blindness ?

Congenital blindness refers to vision loss that is present at birth or develops during the early months of life. It occurs due to abnormalities in the eyes, optic nerve, or brain regions responsible for vision. The condition may result from genetic factors, developmental defects during pregnancy, infections affecting the mother or fetus, or complications during birth that impact ocular or neurological development.

Common causes include hereditary disorders, malformations of the retina or optic nerve, congenital cataracts, glaucoma present at birth, and certain metabolic or chromosomal conditions that interfere with normal visual system development. Although congenital blindness is lifelong in many cases, advances in medical research and ophthalmic treatments have improved the outlook for affected individuals. Early detection through thorough eye examinations in newborns is crucial to identify treatable conditions and initiate timely intervention.

Management depends on the underlying cause and may include specialized medical therapies, corrective procedures, or supportive care to enhance remaining vision and promote visual development. Now, congenital blindness is no longer considered incurable; we treat it and provide measurable improvement, offering hope for better visual function and quality of life
